As a young guy I used to watch the documentaries and historical films of Nazis burning books. Books that the Nazis had decided went contrary to their beliefs and objectives for power. I was proud to live in a country with the First Amendment that prohibited that. I served my country and three of my kids also served all of us pledged to keep such things from happening in the US.

Now, I realize that there is much written, and filmed, that is objectionable. Some is offensive to one group or another. But I vote with my feet – if I don’t like it I don’t buy it or I don’t watch it. I would never though support burning it. I believe in free speech.

I’m an old guy and I get confused easily. I have trouble seeing the difference between book burning and book banning. If all the internet companies get together and ban the sale of a book or film are they not in effect burning that work? Aren’t they trying to suppress any ideas or thoughts in that book or film? Who are these people in these companies with the power to decide what is right and what is wrong? Why do they oppose free speech?

I’m an old guy and I don’t get it…

I understand that your reference of “burning books” is not a literal reference, but rather metaphorical. I am also assuming you’re talking about the 6 Dr.Suess books that were recently taken out of production… in an effort to provide a good discussion and thought, I’d like everyone to rethink how we are defining moments like this. Dr. Suess published alot of books… the 6 in question were taken out of production by the company who hold its rights. He wasn’t canceled or banned.. but in a similar vein as free speech.. isn’t it the company’s right to publish what they want & not publish, what they don’t want? Sooooo…. aren’t we talking about the same thing. Im a sexy guy, and I don’t get it. Hehe.
