Dept. of Education

So the Department of Education is slowly going away. And there are a whole lot of folks out there are really worried and concerned. They want us to believe that public education will tube without this bureaucratic institution. Well, I don’t get it.

All my public education happened BEFORE there was this department. I was old school back in the day when this bureaucracy did not exist. In those days our public education was the envy of the world.

Then in 1979 a guy by the name of President Carter decided to help us out. So he creates this Department of Education. And slowly over time this bureaucracy takes over education. States and local school boards begin to take a back seat. You want the money then teach what we want and teach our way.

And what was the result. Today, two thirds of our kids are not reading or doing Math at grade level. In my day, missing two thirds resulted in an F grade. Today we barely rank in the top 50 in the world. Boy was that a great move. Looks to me that Public Education has already tubed.

And to make matters worse I can’t find “education” in our Constitution. That document does not say that education is a Federal responsibility. What the Constitution does say is that anything NOT in the constitution is the responsibility of the STATES. Remember those? As in the 50 United STATES of America?

So I am happy this bureaucracy is closing. It has accomplished nothing. It has become a burden. Let’s get back to state and local control of our schools. After all, it can’t get much worse.

But then again I’m an old guy and I don’t get it……..
