The election is now over. I have several family members, some of whom I even raised, continue to call my views “divisive.” There is even a political party that claims ownership of America’s “soul.” Well, here is the soul of my America.

  • Freedom: Freedom of speech. We can say what we believe. But unlike the party that claims soul ownership, we have the freedom to disagree without fear of retaliation by the soul owners. Freedom of religion. We can worship the way we want. And if we don’t like the views maintained by our church on things like marriage we can change churches. But unlike the party that claims soul ownership not condemn a church or belief. Freedom of assembly. But not freedom to riot, loot, beat, rob, and kill. And cops should push back when these things happen.
  • Opportunity: We have the God-given right to try – and to fail. Everyone should have an equal opportunity but this does not mean equal success. This the right of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. But unlike the soul owners you shouldn’t pay more merely because you have been successful. A rich person should not pay more for a Big Mac than a poor person. It is the same burger. And this should go for services like Medicare too. But don’t worry – the party that claims the soul of America will determine the levels of richness and poorness.
  • Personal Responsibility: We are not victims even though our soul owners believe we all are. Racism, genderism, glass ceilingism, institutional racism, biasism, and all the other isms espoused by the soul owners. We have the freedom of responsibility. Responsibility for ourselves, our decisions, and our actions. Can’t do the time – don’t do the crime. I have no problem helping out someone down on their luck – but not for decades. Want out of poverty – finish high school, get a job, get married, and then have kids in that order. Need a job – go to school or get trained.

So that is what I see as the true soul of America. That dream. That shining house on the hill. You know, the place where people from all over the world want to come. Just for a chance. So if my family members want to call this divisive well………

I am an old guy and I don’t get it.

Well, it’s going to be an interesting shift. I’m sure you will have plenty to write about going forward.
